East Riding have recently used the multi-million pound facilities at Hull university sports science lab in preparation for the coming Summer 2008 season. East's Head Physio Steve Overton is part of the University set up and first put the idea to Head coach Dan Beardshaw several months ago, to include testing designed to show strength and flexibility in the upper body.
Steve commented "What you are seeing here is equipment that Super League teams have been using for several years, and will be invaluable in not just the next few months, but the next few years. So much testing that is used at amateur clubs is focused on running or static exercises; for example press ups or bench presses.
With the results, individual players will see what they can work on, and how best to improve their overall fitness,strength and performances."
With the club looking to put out 3 open age sides this year; two full contact and a tag team - who have already been accepted into the TagMeritLeague competition, the future is looking bright for the club.
"With such a young side that just seem to soak up knowledge and anything to do with rugby league, proves these players have huge potential. And if things like working with the university's students helps us move ahead of local and national sides must be a good thing." Said Dan Beardshaw, "Along with the second to none facilities at Haworth park; that boast 3 pitches, a floodlit training area and gym and a separate Astro-turf facility based just across the road this is the obvious next step in helping the players develop."
